An anonymous patent lawyer, contactable via snailmail through the Intellectual Property Department of the British branch of ICL PLC, an IT service company with 22000 employees worldwide, explains that software patents stimulate innovation, help small and medium enterprises, are useful for opensource software and must be legalised if Europe is to comply with the TRIPS treaty. Fully supporting the TRIPS treaty is important because otherwise other European industries (pharma?) might lose support in their struggle with third world countries
